Portugal packing list for families
Portugal is a wonderful first multi-stop trip with kids, with short train rides between Lisbon, Porto, and the coast. Steep cobblestone streets, beach days, and island weather all call for slightly different gear, so a thoughtful packing list goes a long way.

Kristina's notes on Portugal
- Lisbon to Porto is an easy train ride of about three hours, and the Algarve is reachable by train or a few hours by car from Lisbon. Madeira and the Azores need a flight, so I treat them as their own leg and pack lighter so we can move quickly.
- Lisbon and Porto are hilly cities with cobblestones that get slick, even when dry. I pack grippy sneakers for everyone and bring a carrier for little ones, because strollers struggle on the steep lanes.
- Pack for two climates. The mainland is warm and dry in summer, while the Azores and Madeira stay milder and can be misty or rainy on any day, so a light rain jacket and a warm layer earn their space.
