Lisbon and Algarve packing list for families

Portugal pairs a steep, cobbled capital with a wild Atlantic coastline, and each needs different gear. This list covers both halves of the trip with kids, plus what the weather does month to month.

Kristina's notes on Lisbon & the Algarve

  1. Lisbon is very hilly and the stone sidewalks get slick, even when dry. Sneakers with real grip matter more here than almost anywhere in Europe, and a carrier beats a stroller for toddlers.
  2. The Algarve is Atlantic water, not the Mediterranean. It stays cool even in summer, so kids who get cold easily are happier in a shorty wetsuit.
  3. I split the trip so Lisbon comes first, then the beach. Ending with slow Algarve days gives everyone a real rest before the flight home.
