Porto and Douro Valley packing list for families

Porto's hills, slick cobblestones and Atlantic weather make it a different trip from sunny Lisbon. Here is what we pack for riverside walks, vineyard days and the inevitable shower.

Kristina's notes on Porto & the Douro Valley

  1. Porto is steep and paved in slick granite cobbles. I pack shoes with real grip and bring a carrier for little ones, since a stroller turns every hill into a workout.
  2. The Atlantic keeps Porto cooler than Lisbon, and the ocean is chilly even in summer. Pack a sweater for evenings by the river and don't count on long beach swims.
  3. The Douro Valley is beautiful by boat or by car, but the roads are winding. A river cruise day is often easier with kids than driving between wine estates.
