Washington, DC packing list for families
DC is a walking city with security checkpoints at nearly every door, so how you pack your day bag matters as much as your suitcase. The weather swings a lot by season, from humid summers to chilly winter afternoons on the Mall.

Kristina's notes on Washington, DC
- Pack a small backpack instead of a big tote. Every museum and federal building screens bags, and smaller bags move through security much faster.
- White House tours are requested through your member of Congress, often months ahead. Washington Monument and Capitol tickets are worth booking early online too.
- The National Mall is bigger than it looks on a map. Pick two museums a day at most with kids, and see the monuments at night when it's cooler and they're lit up.
