Tromsø northern lights packing list for families

Tromsø sits far above the Arctic Circle, so a winter trip means long nights, icy streets and hours outdoors waiting for the lights. This list covers the cold-weather extras that keep kids warm and happy.

Kristina's notes on Tromsø Northern Lights

  1. Northern lights viewing happens late at night, often far from town on a guided chase. I plan these for the first nights of the trip so there's time to try again if clouds roll in, and I let kids nap in the afternoon.
  2. From late November to mid-January the sun doesn't rise above the horizon, though there's a soft blue twilight midday. Kids handle it better than you'd think, but plan outdoor activities around those few light hours.
  3. Many tour companies provide thermal suits and boots for sledding and aurora trips, so check before buying bulky gear. Your own warm base layers, mittens and a hat that covers the ears still matter most.
