Lake Bled and Ljubljana packing list for families

Slovenia packs an alpine lake, river gorges, and a charming capital into a very small country. Packing for swims, short hikes, and quick summer storms makes it easy with kids.

Kristina's notes on Slovenia: Bled & Ljubljana

  1. The traditional pletna boat out to Bled Island is a highlight, and then there are 99 steps up to the church. A carrier is easier than a stroller here and on the gorge and castle trails.
  2. Ljubljana's center is mostly car-free and very walkable, with a funicular up to the castle. It is about 40 minutes from Bled, so I base the family in one place and do the other as a day trip.
  3. Lake Bled is warm enough to swim in July and August, while Lake Bohinj nearby is cooler and quieter. I pack swimsuits and water shoes, because many lake entries are pebbly.
