Charleston and Kiawah Island packing list for families

This trip mixes polished city dinners with sandy, sunny island days, so your bags need to handle both. Add in Lowcountry humidity and marsh bugs, and a few specific items make a big difference.

Kristina's notes on Charleston & Kiawah Island

  1. Split the trip: a couple of nights downtown for walking and food, then the island for beach and bikes. Kiawah has miles of paved trails, so kids can ride almost everywhere.
  2. Bring a picaridin bug spray for dusk. The no-see-ums near the marsh surprise almost everyone, and they love little ankles.
  3. Summer is hot and sticky with afternoon storms most days. Plan beach time and walking tours for the morning and save the afternoon for the pool or a nap.
