Aspen summer packing list for families

Summer in Aspen means trail mornings, music in the afternoon, and weather that can swing from warm sun to cold rain in an hour. Packing for altitude and quick changes is what keeps kids happy here.

Kristina's notes on Aspen in Summer

  1. Aspen sits near 8,000 feet, and the first day hits kids harder than you expect. I plan an easy first afternoon, push water all day, and save the big hikes for day two or three.
  2. Summer storms build almost every afternoon in July and August. We hike early, aim to be off exposed trails by lunch, and every backpack gets a packable rain shell, even when the morning is cloudless.
  3. Maroon Bells needs a reservation for the shuttle or parking in season, and the good time slots go fast. I book as soon as our dates are set, then plan the rest of the day around it.
