Sydney and Great Barrier Reef packing list for families

A Sydney and reef trip covers two very different climates, from a cool harbour city to the warm tropics up north. Packing for both, plus reef-ready gear for kids, keeps the long trip comfortable.

Kristina's notes on Sydney & Great Barrier Reef

  1. US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to visit Australia, applied for through the official Australian ETA app. Take care of it as soon as your flights are booked.
  2. Stinger season in tropical Queensland runs roughly November through May. Reef tours provide stinger suits, but I pack a kid-size one because rental sizes often run large.
  3. Sydney and the reef are different climates. In July, Sydney can be jacket weather while Cairns is warm and sunny, so pack in layers for both.
