Garden Route packing list for families

The Garden Route mixes forest trails, boat trips, and beach days, all under weather that can change in an hour. A few smart layers and good shoes make this road trip easy with kids.

Kristina's notes on South Africa: Garden Route

  1. The Garden Route is malaria-free, which makes it one of my favorite ways to do South Africa with little ones. I like pairing it with a malaria-free game reserve in the Eastern Cape for a few nights of safari.
  2. Weather changes fast along this coast and rain can show up in any month. Pack a rain jacket and a fleece for everyone, even in summer.
  3. Base yourself in one or two towns, like Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, and do day trips from there. Kids handle the drives far better than packing up every night.
